The Type 3 Ka-Chi was an amphibious medium tank, designed and used by the Imperial Japanese Navy[N 1] during World War II. It was based on the Type 2 Ka-Mi amphibious tank. [2]

Description[]

The Type 3 Ka-Chi was of all welded construction, and was fitted with two detachable floats, one on the bow and one on the stern, which could be discarded once the tank was ashore. While in the water, the tank was driven by two propellers working off the engine, and steered by the commander, using twin rudders operated from the turret, which featured a chimmney like escape hatch.

Operated by a crew of seven, the tank was armed with a 47 mm (1.85 in) main gun, supplemented by a pair of 7.7 mm (0.303 in) machine guns, one of which was fitted to the turret.[1]

Notes[]

  1. This was due to the Imperial Japanese Army losing interest in amphibious tanks.[1]
