- No. 1 Squadron - Assigned to Fighter Command - France based at outbreak of war, covered retreat from Dunkirk.[1]
- No. 3 Squadron - Assigned to Fighter Command - Whilst stationed at Wick, "B" flight split off to form No.232 Squadron. No.3 Squadron then moved down to England
- No. 17 Squadron - Assigned to Fighter Command - Fought in Battle of Britain then sent out to Burma

- No. 9 Squadron -Assigned to Bomber Command - Participated with No.617 Squadron in Tallboy attacks on the Tirpitz.

- No. 12 Squadron - Assigned to Bomber Command - Lost almost all aircraft during campaign in France [2]

- No. 98 Squadron - Assigned to Bomber Command - Attacked German coastal defenses in preparation for the Invasion of Normandy
